In the Odyssey Hades didn’t have anything that has directly happened to him. Although he didn’t help or give Odysseus any trouble he had thoughts on what had happened to him on his journey.
During the time when Odysseus visited the Cyclops everything turned bad when the Cyclops wanted to kill Odysseus and his men. During this time Hades was watching and expecting Odysseus to die several times. Hades was already tending to a few of his men who had died and was already planning on welcoming the rest of Odysseus and his men to the underworld. Then Odysseus showed his leadership and got out of the Cyclops lair. Hades was amazed at Odysseus’ ability to cheat death even when death seems inevitable.
Next when Odysseus was at the land of the dead Odysseus found his father there. Meanwhile Hades wanted to meet Odysseus and congratulate him on escaping the Cyclops cave, but he had to deal with a string of deaths that had occurred in Athens. Although he did not get to meet Odysseus he was still happy because he knew with the dangerous journey ahead Odysseus would soon succumb to inevitable death.
After the land of the dead Odysseus had to pass through the sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis. First Odysseus prepared his men for the sirens. Meanwhile Hades was positive that Odysseus and his men would fall to either Scylla or Charybdis. He also had foreseen that Odysseus would outsmart the Sirens as he did the Cyclops. As Odysseus and his men passed the sirens he didn’t give in to their temptation. Now Odysseus had to pass around Scylla and Charybdis which Hades knew would be the death of him. Now Hades was preparing for the death of Odysseus. He had all of the arrangements set because he knew this would be the death of him. Odysseus approached the beast and told his men about all the danger they’ve been in before. Soon Scylla started attacking his men and killedl more of his best men. They then escaped and moved on. Hades was in shock as he thought this part of the journey was certain death for Odysseus. They passed Charybdis easily and this didn’t surprise Hades as it did with the battle with Scylla.
After the main danger passed they had to battle theirselves as they went to the land of the Cattle of the sun god. When they went to the cattle of the sun god Odysseus told his men not to kill the Cattle. Despite this Odysseus fell asleep and his men slaughtered the cattle and ate them. Odysseus knew this would be mean bad fortune for them. Hades then knew that under the power of Zeus Odysseus would perish. When they left Zeus hit his ship with a bolt of lightning this destroyed his ship. By a miracle Odysseus survived. Hades was happy for Odysseus after all he’s been through. Hades had never seen a man cheat death as much as Odysseus.
